What's up everyone! I'm gearing up for SXSW and checked out a few films during the film portion that starts before the music conference which is what I'm here for in Austin, TX for and I couldn't wait to share my experience with you!
The first movie I saw was titled "Pelada" which means "naked" and is also used in reference to "Pickup soccer games" in Brazil. I had seen the old trailer several months ago and never thought I'd be sitting at the world premiere! It was really exciting and I made sure to take plenty of pictures, haha.
I don't want to ruin the movie for you but it was basically about 2 people who just graduated from college and weren't ready to give up their passion for soccer. What they did was travel all over the world and play in pickup games and document their experiences which were absolutely beautiful.
This movie really hit home to me being a former soccer player and always wishing to go all the way to the pros. Now my passions are focused in the arts which are not much different then having a ball at your feet but it reminded me of the same feeling I shared with the main actors about not wanting to let go of that fire and passion you have as a soccer player pursuing big dreams.
The moments they caught on camera were shot extremely well and were very touching. This movie does a great job of capturing how much soccer means to people around the world and how people everywhere manage to play regardless of their conditions. You get to see the extreme contrasts of kids making their own soccer balls and playing on garbage dumps as compared to the cushy conditions you see in the U.S with soccer moms, and flashy youth soccer clubs.
It was also beautiful to see how powerful soccer was to everyone from little kids, to prisoners, to older grandpa's, hahaha. I highly recommend this movie to anyone that has gone through moments in their lives where you weren't ready to move on from something you really loved. Secondly, I definitely recommend this if you are a soccer or sports fan in general!
This was an absolutely beautiful movie and I spoke with Gwendolyn and Luke (Who are now engaged!) and they said the movie will hit select theaters around the nation soon on a more "Indie" scale, so keep your eyes peeled because this is a must see documentary!
I'll keep you guys posted on more SXSW happenings as the week goes by!! It's going to be a crazyyyy week!
